Data owner is a term that refers to the individual who is accountable for and responsible for the protection and classification of a certain set of data. The data owner will classify the data. And then will delegate the day to day responsibility, such as backing up the data, to a data custodian.
When you're using discretionary access controls or DAC, the creator or owner is responsible for permitting or denying users to access the data based on an access control list. And Microsoft SharePoint has technology which allows users to control access to files that they've generated. The data custodian is typically an administrator and this individual is responsible for implementing the security controls necessary to meet the data owner's requirements for security.
The data custodian is also responsible for backing up the data and ensuring the data's integrity. Data processors are users, these individuals are the ones who access the resources. The users are restricted by the security controls that were put in place by the data custodian. So whenever you have a new piece of data, the data owner is the one who decides the security controls that need to be put in place for that data.
The data custodian then implements those controls. And also makes sure that the data is backed up appropriately, and the data processors are the individuals who access the data as part of their job function. It is very important to be familiar with these terms because you will most likely see questions on the CISSP exam relating to these three categories of individuals.
